 Gerry Robb

Back in the “old days”, when all editing was done on tape-based systems, Gerry spent most of his time fast-forwarding and rewinding to find the perfect shot. Growing tired of the wine of the tape transport mechanism, he knew there had to be a better way. Fortunately, Gerry was able to put some of that time to good use reading video trade publications. It was here that he stumbled upon a little know company named AVID Technology.

In 1989, computers were relatively new and had very poor graphics. Nobody thought that they would ever be able to edit video and AVID was off to a slow start. So, when Gerry called AVID in late 1999, they immediately put a salesperson on a plane and demoed the original Avid system on his dining room table! He loved the interface and most of the capabilities but the AVID wasn’t quite ready for primetime. So instead, he built a $250K conventional studio. Even though the studio was state of the art for 1990, Gerry was still convinced that Non-Linear was the way to go.

Finally, in 1992, it was possible to build a non-linear system with of the shelf technology. It wasn’t an Avid, but at least it was a start. Unfortunately, it would be 7 years until Final Cut pro was released so the software of choice was Adobe Premiere. Premiere worked, but it lacked many of the features that professional need.

In 1999, Apple released Final Cut Pro! Gerry immediately switched from Premiere and hasn’t looked back. Gerry uses Final Cut Pro in all aspects of video editing including: 30 second commercials, TV shows, Training and exercise videos, multi-camera sporting events, and the most difficult of all video projects – The Wedding!

Gerry currently produces and edits videos in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
